Google Expeditions & Self Guided Expeditions

The Google Expedition app contains over 700 immersive virtual field trips that allow you to take students places like never before! Farmington R-7 has a Google Expedition kit that you can check out to use with your class. Expedition trips range from college campus tours to the wonders of the world to inside the respiratory system! There really is a little bit of something for everyone here! Kindergarten through high school classrooms have successfully integrated Google Expeditions trips into their curriculum.

When using the kit, students will use a VR headset equipped with an iPod to partake in the Expedition. The teacher will lead the students on the trip via an iPad. Each portion of the trip is a 360 picture/slide controlled by the teacher with options to focus the students toward certain areas of the slide. The teacher leader is also provided with material to read and questions to ask regarding each picture in the trip.

To check out the Google Expeditions kit find the Google Expeditions page on this Ed Tech Blog.  I’ve linked it here for you. The calendar and sign up sheet are available on the page. One of the best ways to learn about Expeditions is by downloading the free app to your phone or tablet. You can view all of the slideshows there so that you are ready when the kit arrives.

We currently have one kit at FHS and one for grades K-8. Each kit comes with 15 viewers and iPods along with one teacher iPad and chargers. This link will take you to a step by step guide for the Farmington R-7 kits along with some helpful information for planning a lesson that includes a Google Expedition. Also, check out this great set of Google Expeditions resources from Shake Up Learning!

Finally, Google Expeditions now offers several self-guided options for students. What this means is that students can lead themselves through the trip on a personal device connected to WiFi or on the kits we provide! Check back to the Official Spreadsheet of Google Expeditions often as they are adding new content often!
